I came up with the idea of Bionic Betty when I was in my twenties (back in the mid-'90s, Gen- X'er!), living on my own and managing to get by on little money while having some pretty awesome experiences. I had moved out of my parent's home when I was eighteen and started on my own adventures. I was a young, fearless, self-sufficient woman living each day to its fullest. It was a time in my life where I snowboarded, white water kayaked, worked on my own truck (couldn't afford to take it to a shop), and made do on very little money. I gave my all to anything or anyone. I had amazing friends by my side sharing these experiences I value so much. I had an attitude that nothing could stop me from doing just about anything. Each day was exciting in some way. Mind you, I was not always an angel, and things were not always easy, but I was doing life on my terms and having fun at the same time. I felt invincible! Subsequently, Bionic Betty was born!
A "Betty" is a cool chick. A Bionic Betty takes it a step further. She is a hard worker, honest, loyal, kind, and independent. She can change a flat tire, care for a child's scraped knee, and throw a dinner party together at a moment's notice, all while barely breaking a sweat. Grace under pressure, if you will. She takes care of her family. She loves immensely. Every woman is a Bionic Betty! Life isn't easy! Being a woman in today's world is tough! We have to exist with a determination that we were put on this crazy earth for a reason and not let anything or anyone stand in our way of achieving success, however it is measured.
My Grandmother, being appropriately named Betty, was the original Bionic Betty in my opinion. You could say she was likely my main inspiration from the get-go. She was an unbelievable woman. More about her later! Some of my stories are a little wild and some are sad. A couple of friends of mine have said I should write a book. This is when I though a blog might be fun.
The first ideas became t-shirts with funky fonts simply bearing "Bionic Betty". I bought cheap t-shirts and created designs using an old word processing program, before Microsoft Word existed, on my friend's computer that eventually became iron-on transfers. Stickers soon followed. I still have some of both! I was proud to show off my spirit of being bold and creative. Many experiences later (most of them amazing, some not so amazing), I am ready to share these stories and experiences with you.
I have held many different occupations, have had brief encounters with a few notable personalities, built a career in the Human Resources field, got married, and had kids in my not quite finished life. Who knows what lies ahead? This blog is drawn from my life experiences. Thank you so much for being part of this journey with me. I hope my stories will inspire you and/or at least make you laugh at times.
I consider myself a Bionic Betty, and I know each of you is one too.
All my best,
Bionic Betty
